GoldenGate is one of the most popular replication technologies for MS SQL Server. It is high performance, robust and reliable. I have used Oracle GoldenGate 12.2 for MS SQL Server in many different deployment types including upgrade, fan-out and bi-directional. GoldenGate is very suitable for all of these replication types.
- With Oracle GoldenGate (OGG) for MS SQL Server you can replicate from older versions of SQL Server such as 2005 (using OGG 11) or 2008 to SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014 (using OGG 12). This is done by setting up heterogeneous replication between the older version of SQL Server and the new version. This allows for an opportunity for extensive testing of the new version, near zero downtime cutover and the ability to setup reverse replication for fail-back.
- Fan-out replication. Using GoldenGate you can fan-out replication; replicating one SQL Server database to many target databases. This can be very useful for retail Point of Sale systems. I have personally been involved with replicating a single SQL Server database to over 500 target databases. I have no reason to believe that with proper tuning and configuration that this could not support thousands.
- Bi-directional replication. SQL Server is the best option for replicating MS SQL Server bi-directionally. Configuring Conflict Detection and Resolution (CDR) is key to bi-directional replication. GoldenGate has a robust, high performing CDR subsystem.
Oracle GoldenGate 12.2 is a great solution for replicating between SQL Server systems. In addition, GoldenGate can be used to replicate to and from MS SQL Server to other database systems including big data. This not only allows for data replication but migrations as well. With Oracle GoldenGate you can replicate, and thus migrate to other platforms.
