GoldenGate 12.2 has introduced several great features. Some are more important than others for certain platforms such as GoldenGate for MS SQL Server. Others are great features for all platforms. Here are a few of my favorite features:
- Self Describing Trail Files, AKA Metadata Encapsulation. This feature is enabled by default. The first time a table is referenced in the trail file it includes the table definition. It includes a Database Definition Record (DDR) that describes the character sets, time zone, etc. It also includes a Table Definition Record (TDR) which includes table and column definitions. No more ASSUMETARGETDEFS and no more defgen.
- Heartbeat tables. The heartbeat table automatically creates heartbeat tables and generates lag data for all platforms. This has been done in Oracle for years, but was more difficult to implement in SQL Server and other platforms. Great feature.
- You can see how I addressed a configuration challenge with the defaul Heartbeat table settings here:
- Capture Support for SQL Server Standard Edition. Now with Oracle GoldenGate replication works with Standard Edition.
There are a number of other parameters and options, but these are my favorites. I have been working with GoldenGate 12.2 on a large production implementations and have found it to be very stable and awesome to work with.
